Monastery garden
After renovation, the monastery garden is a pleasant place to take a walk – you will find a geological exhibition, a gazebo, a footpath, old varieties of fruit trees, and flower beds representing typical Krkonoše flora.
The monastery garden is located near the city center between the monastery cloister and the castle with its park. It offers a place for relaxation, entertainment, and education for young and old alike.
From the mid-18th century, the garden was used by the Order of Augustinian Friars for their livelihood and also for the needs of the monastery pharmacy. The garden was restored and beautified to its present form by the Krkonoše National Park Administration between 2011 and 2013 and has been open to the public all year round ever since.
Come and take a walk through the orchard of old fruit varieties that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the Krkonoše Mountains. A stream flows between the trees, but it is not a brook, rather an exposed water channel from the Elbe River, which is sure to pleasantly refresh your aching feet in the summer.
Closer to the castle, next to a small pond, you will find an open-air geological exhibition called Rocks of the Krkonoše Mountains for Non-Geologists. It consists of a pier with seven double-sided information panels about the geology of the Krkonoše Mountains and large pieces of basic Krkonoše rocks that children can try to jump over.
Children and playful adults alike will appreciate the various natural and artificial surfaces on the footpath, which you can try to conquer with your eyes closed. Next to the gazebo with seating is a wicker tunnel with climbing plants, where children will enthusiastically chase each other and play hide and seek.
In addition to the rescue station for disabled animals, the monastery garden also features nine grid flower beds representing various types of Krkonoše flora, such as saffron meadows, a typical Krkonoše flower meadow, a gravel bench, and a typical monastery herb bed.
