Asteroid by Michal Gabriel

Asteroid by Michal Gabriel

Another exceptional work of art was installed on the church square (náměstí Míru) in Vrchlabí - the Asteroid sculpture by the leading Czech sculptor Michal Gabriel. This monumental object thus temporarily becomes part of the life of the town for a year and enters into a direct dialogue with its historical space and everyday rhythm.

With its organic form and mysterious structure, Asteroid resembles a body that has come from another world - it hovers between earth and sky, between reality and vision. The work not only enriches the public space, but also reminds us that contemporary art has its place outside the walls of galleries - directly among people.

It was lent to the town of Vrchlabí by the great gallery EPO1 of the Kasper family from Trutnov. Traditionally, modern art in public space arouses a lot of emotions, but above all it is a challenge for reflection.

The installation was carried out in cooperation with Kasper TS, whose high-tech truck with a hydraulic arm ensured the smooth and technically demanding installation of the work in its designated place.
The city only paid for the transport. The location of the work on the square is in a similar place to the location of Lubomír Typlt's Water Power Station, another past work called The Throne.

Art in space

Power for Space

As the name suggests, this is a project that goes beyond the gallery space itself.

"Space" is something like an unappreciated work of art, like a canvas without which nothing would exist. Seeing art in the context of space in all its diversity brings the potential to expand the experience to a whole new dimension. So why reduce it to a single building? Thus, one of the activities of the EPO1 gallery is the installation of sculptures in public spaces, where they can be encountered by both casual passers-by and art lovers walking purposefully towards them.
