Blueberry Trail
Low shrubs covered with blueberries ripening at the end of summer are characteristic of the spruce forests of the Krkonoše Mountains, through which this recommended but relatively demanding trail leads. It takes us to the top of Žalý Hill, whose old German name is Heidelberg – Blueberry Mountain.
In addition to ore deposits, the deep forests have long been considered one of the greatest treasures of the Krkonoše Mountains. The first colonizers of the mountain forests were prospectors and miners. In the mid-16th century, the royal mining governor Kryštof of Gendorf began mining iron ore and establishing ironworks. The mines and smelters consumed a lot of wood. Gendorf invited experienced woodcutters and rafters from his homeland of Carinthia, Styria, and Tyrol. They settled with their families and founded new settlements, such as Krausovy Boudy, above which our route to Špindlerův Mlýn leads. The settlers harvested wood, built charcoal kilns, and floated timber down the rivers. Their engineering skills in taming streams have been preserved. Examples can be found near Boudy u Bílého Labe on a stream called Čertova strouha. Here, a masterful dam construction, consisting of dozens of stone thresholds that slow down the flow of water and prevent flooding, has survived for more than 100 years.
From Vrchlabí's Míru Square, take Husova Street past the Krkonoše Museum along the K10 cycle route and, following the yellow tourist trail, climb past the Kněžická chalupa cottage to the "Křížovky" crossroads and then turn right towards Benecko. At the Zlatá vyhlídka hotel, turn right onto the K10 cycle route and climb up to the Žalý lookout tower. Then continue along the K10 cycle route to the "Rovinka" crossroads and continue along the K13 cycle route via Třídomí to Horní Mísečky. Here, turn right onto the K1A cycle route and descend to Špindlerův Mlýn to the White Bridge. After the bridge, join the K16 cycle route and ride through Svatý Petr to the Stoh ski lift and continue along the K16 cycle route to Bouda U Bílého Labe. From there, descend along Bílý Labe on Weberova cesta, continuing on K16 to the log cabin at Dívčí lávky. Follow cycle route K14 back to Bílý most, which you will cross again. Follow the K1A cycle route uphill again, parallel to the yellow tourist trail, to the "U Krásné Pláně" crossroads. Continue along the K1A cycle route to Strážné and then along the road to Vrchlabí.
Square of Peace
Gather your strength for the hills with a view of the historic square dominated by the Church of St. Lawrence, four historic houses, and the open Elbe canal, which today serves only for summer cooling.
Chapel of St. Anne and the Fourteen Holy Helpers
Dating back to the mid-18th century, it is dedicated to St. Anne, patron of the town of Vrchlabi, who was supposed to protect the town against plague and cholera epidemics. It was restored in 1997–1999. It is located in a place with the most beautiful view of the town of Vrchlabi.
Kněžická chalupa (Kněžice Cottage)
Treat yourself to a short break and rest with pleasant refreshments at Kněžická chalupa, where you will be warmly welcomed.
Zaly Viewing Tower
The only stone viewing tower with nearly a panoramic view, this is a popular destination not only for the inhabitants of Vrchlabi but also for many tourists. In the summer you can reach it on foot or by bike, or by chairlift from Herlikovice, and ride downhill on a scooter. It is an ideal destination for a winter hike in the snow-clad countryside, or a sleigh trip which you can ride back downhill. If you are in Herlikovice on skis, you can take a short walk from the upper chairlift station, and after less than 200 metres you can have something nice to eat in the pleasure restaurant.
Špindlerův Mlýn
In the capital of the Krkonoše Mountains, you can recharge your batteries, look around, and soak up the atmosphere. The typical white bridge over the still small Elbe River and the many sweet, salty, and bitter temptations will easily grab you and keep you from continuing on your journey.
Strážné
A mountain village with beautiful views and a good local restaurant.
Four historical houses
Due to the reconstruction, the exhibition in the four historic houses is closed for two years from 1 May 2025.
